Kim Barnes Arico has gotten the St. John’s ladies to their first ever Sweet Sixteen. The Storm had to head down to Oklahoma to play the Sooners in their own home, no easy task. But the lady Johnny’s were up for it and they will now head to Fresno California to play Duke.
St. John’s had to play in front of a raucous Oklahoma crowd. The venue however would be a non factor, as many Storm players took the spotlight as a chance to prove themselves. They would prove quite a bit, beating the Sooners 74-70.
Shenneika Smith had 18 points while hitting two massive shots from downtown. Coming into the game Smith had only eight three pointers on the season. She hit one at the buzzer of the first half to give St. John’s momentum and a 39-36 lead.
Eugeneia McPherson also had a huge day for the Storm. Her 21 points led the Johnny’s and she hit two three pointers as well.
The 6th seeded Sooners turned the ball over early and often. The Storm took advantage of that, scoring 21 points off of the 19 Oklahoma turnovers.
St. John’s will now head out to California to face the 2nd seeded Duke Blue Devils. This game will be infront of an unbiased crowd, something St. John’s did not see in Oklahoma.
