Orlando Sanchez, from Monroe College (JUCO), is high on St. John’s list for more than one reason.

The 6’9″, 205 pound power forward who will be eligible to transfer for the 2012 season possesses a typical Lavin type player body, with an ability to get up the floor with ease.  He has an ability to shoot the ball and has displayed a mid-range game that can come in handy playing the 4 or 5 for the Red Storm next season.

Playing for Monroe a season ago as a freshman, Sanchez performed well en route to the National Championship and showed that he had high major potential.  This season, things have continued to trend upward for the recruit as Monroe is currently #3 in the nation and he is a major reason why.

Over recent days, reports have suggested that St. John’s is heavily pursuing Sanchez.  The Dominican Republic native, who played for the national under-21 team under John Calipari, said he would wait to commit until after the 2011-2012 season.

Monroe is currently in the postseason, looking to build on the success of last year.  They played their first game this afternoon against Indian Hills CC, which was the junior college of former St. John’s star Dwight Hardy.

His teammate, Marco Bourgault, has also been heavily linked with the Red Storm.  A piece detailing him will come in the near future.

Other teams in the mix for Sanchez include Cincinnati, Providence, Connecticut, West Virginia, Oregon, Iowa State, Baylor, Texas A&M, Rhode Island, and Florida International.
